The Check Engine Light: A Cause for Panic?

Yikes, that looks serious! The red light, the word "CHECK" in all caps, the fact that it's referring to the essential heart of your vehicle...who wouldn't worry? But before rushing to your auto provider's service department, there is one simple thing that you can do- check your gas cap. A loose gas cap can trigger your check engine light because of an improper amount of pressurization in your vehicle's fuel system. Basically, this just means that when your cap isn't appropriately tightened, harmful gas vapors can escape into the air. So the next time that you find this ominous little red warning staring back at you, just take a moment to turn your gas cap until you hear it "click" once or twice. Please note that if the gas cap is the cause of the check engine light, it may be a few minutes before it disappears. Hopefully this works and you've just saved yourself a trip to the dealership. However, if you notice that it's been nearly an hour since you've tightened the cap and the light is still illuminated, then you may want to give the service department a ring.
